Adela de la Torre

Adela de la Torre is a Latina-American professor[1] and a university administrator. On January 21, 2018 she was announced to be the new president at San Diego State University, the ninth permanent president of SDSU and the first woman to serve in that role.[2] She is an expert on Latino and Chicano health issues.[3][4]

Early life and education

Adela de la Torre was born in California.[5] She attended the University of California Berkeley, completing a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1982.

Career

de la Torre was Director of the Mexican-American Studies Center at the University of Arizona.[6][7]

She has served as the Chair of the Department of Chicana/o Studies,[8] director of the Center for Transnational Health, and is a Distinguished Professor at UC Davis, the first Latina scholar to receive that distinction.[9] De la Torre is also a founding member and former President of the American Society of Hispanic Economists.

She writes and speaks about the importance of helping students from underprivileged backgrounds with issues related to student debt.[10] She is also a co-editor of Speaking from the Body: Latinas on Health and Culture, a collection of personal reflections on health care experiences from Latina patients or their family caregivers or friends, combined with professional analysis of the narratives with a discussion of Latina health issues and policy recommendations.

Her primary fields of research include childhood obesity, bi-national heath, science and educational disparities[11] and interventions for Chicana/o Latina/o students.[12] De la Torre's research was recognized by the American Society of Hispanic Economists when it honored her with its biennial Academic Achievement Award in 2016.

De la Torre has frequently been quoted in the media about student issues, including tuition fees,[13] student protests[14][15] and student safety.[16]

De la Torre was named the president of San Diego State University on Jan. 31, 2018. She will join the campus on or before June 30.[17]
