Abzurdah is a 2015 Argentine film, starring María Eugenia Suárez and Esteban Lamothe.

Production

The film is based on the book Abzurdah, the autobiography of Cielo Latini. Latini did not work on the production, because María Eugenia Suárez tried to avoid imitating her.[1]

Abzurdah is the first film starring María Eugenia Suárez.[2] As she plays a character with anorexia, she followed a strict, doctor-supervised diet, which led to a weight loss of 6 kilograms (13 lb).[3]

The film was shot in three months.[1]

Plot

Cielo (María Eugenia Suárez) is a teenage girl from La Plata, who falls in love with Alejo (Esteban Lamothe), a man from Avellaneda, nine years older than her. They met on an online dating service, where Cielo used the username "Abzurdah". She fell in love with him, but he only dated her to have sex. Eventually he dropped her because of the distance between their cities, and she developed anorexia because of it. She tried to reopen their relationship, but he only had sex with her and continued his relations with his new girlfriends. Cielo started a blog glorifying anorexia as a lifestyle, which was closed by the server after a couple of months. The anorexia eventually drove her to an unsuccessful suicide attempt.

Reception

The film was a huge success in Argentina, selling 30,797 tickets on the premiere. It was the most seen film of the day, followed by the American film San Andreas, and many cinemas increased the number of plays for the film.[4] The film also sold 581,883 tickets in its first 18 days since premiere.[5] [6]
