ABC Tropical North is an ABC Local Radio station based in Mackay and broadcasting to the surrounding region in Queensland. This includes the towns of Proserpine, Sarina, Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands.

The station began broadcasting as 4QA in 1951 on 720 AM[1] (later 756) as a relay of the national program. Studios were then built and local programs began in 1955. The station now broadcasts through the following main FM transmitters along with a number of low-power FM repeaters:

  • 4QAA 101.1 FM
  • 4QAA/T 104.9 FM
  • 4QAA/T 91.7 FM

  • Breakfast with Meecham Philpott – 6:30am to 10:00 am
  • Mornings with Tegan Philpott – 10:00 am to 11:00 am

Saturday

  • Saturday Breakfast with Jono O’Neill – 6:00 am to 10:00 am

Each weekday morning, ABC Tropical North broadcasts a local rural affairs program called The Rural Report which airs at 6:15am during the local breakfast program. The Rural Report is a shared program between ABC Tropical North and ABC Wide Bay, and features content relevant to both regions. A Mackay-based rural reporter alternates presenting duties with a Bundaberg-based rural reporter.

When local programs are not broadcast the station is a relay of ABC Capricornia, ABC Southern Queensland and 612 ABC Brisbane.
