The 3rd Division (alternatively: Division 3, Lion Division, 3rd Infantry Division) is a South Sudanese armed group that operates all over the entire country. It is cored in Wunyiek, Aweil East state. It is believed to be the strongest group among 9 other governmental military groups in South Sudan. It is part of Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) (later South Sudan Defense Force).[2] Their current military chief is major general Santino Deng Wol. Mathiang Anyoor which interprets "brown caterpillar", is its subdivision.
In 2011, it was estimated to have a strength of 7,000 men with an additional 640 in the attached Abyei Battalion.[3]
