2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualification

Qualification for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup are currently being held to determine the sixteen participants in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup.

Qualification format

In line with the new FIBA Calendar format implemented since 2017, FIBA Asia will begin their own qualifiers for 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in 2018. Pre-qualifiers will be contested on sub-zone basis and will take place during the same second and third windows of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers. Teams that will emerge victorious in the Pre-qualifiers will qualify to the Second Round which will commence immediately after the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.[1]

Sub-zone Pre-Qualifiers

Teams that did not manage to advance to the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification First round and teams that did not participate in it, play in the first round of the pre-qualifiers.

Gulf Region

Teams from the Gulf Region will play in two different rounds, during the same second and third windows of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers. The top two (2) teams will qualify to the Main Qualifiers.[2]

First Round

The First Round was held from 23–26 February in Bahrain, held during the second window of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification First round.

Second Round

The Second Round was played from 27–30 June in United Arab Emirates, during the third window of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification First round. The teams carried their records from the First round to the second wherein only the top two teams advanced to the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers taking place in September this year.[3]

Southeast Asia

The Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Pre-Qualifier for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup took place in Nonthaburi, Thailand from 26–30 June, during the third window of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers. The Round-Robin format tournament featured six (6) teams participating from which the top four (4) advanced to the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers taking place in September this year.[4]

South Asia

South Asia Basketball Association (SABA) will start their pre-qualifiers on 26 June 2018, during the third window of the Asian Qualifiers.[5]

Regional Pre-Qualifiers

The twelve teams that qualified from the Sub-zone Pre-Qualifiers were divided into two regions: Western Region and Eastern Region. The top four teams from each region will join the top 16 teams in the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers which is scheduled to be held in November 2019.

Western Region Pre-Qualifiers

The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers (Western Region) was held in Bahrain from 11 to 15 September 2018. This pre-qualifiers saw five teams — hosts Bahrain, Saudi Arabia (Gulf Zone), Palestine (West Asian Zone), Sri Lanka and Bangladesh (South Asian Zone) — vied for the four qualifying spots.[6] On 14 August 2018, the competition schedules has been confirmed.[7]

Eastern Region Pre-Qualifiers

The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Pre-Qualifiers (Eastern Region) will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 27 November to 4 December 2018. This pre-qualifiers will see seven teams — Indonesia, hosts Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia (SEABA) and Macau (sole team from East Asia sub-zone) and the two Oceania teams from Fiji and Guam — vying for four qualifying spots.[8]
