The 2018 Khuzestan protests, that are dubbed “the Uprising of Dignity”,[4][5][6] are a series of ongoing protests by Iranian Arabs located in the Khuzestan province of Iran.[7] The protests started on 28 March 2018, and are against discrimination towards the ethnic Arab minority.[8][9]

Timeline

28 March

The protests initially started in Ahvaz on 28 March after a popular Iranian cartoon show that used figurines to depict the different ethnicities of Iran, ignored the Arab minority located in Khuzestan.[10]

29 June-1 July

On 29 June, massive protests erupted in Khorramshahr, Abadan and other cities of the Khuzestan province.[1] The demonstrations initially were peaceful, with protesters chanting in both Arabic and Farsi languages. By late Saturday June 30th and into early on Sunday morning July 1st, protesters began throwing stones and confronting security forces in Khorramshahr, resulting in escalation of violence and use of heavy machine gun fire. One video showing demonstrators dragging away a man who couldn't walk.[1] Iranian state TV reported on July 1st that "peace had returned" to Khorramshahr and an unspecified number of protesters had been arrested, also claiming that some demonstrators carried firearms during the unrest.[1] Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told journalists there had been no deaths. A deputy to Fazli later said the violence wounded one civilian and 10 police officers.[1] Some sources outside of Iran claimed one protester was killed during the protests.[2]

Arrests

Up to 140 people have been arrested by the security forces in April 2018.[10]
