It was held from June 25 through July 1 in Doha, Qatar, hosted by the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation. Qualifying tournaments were held from June 21 to 23, with the Al Sadd Sports Club hosting both qualifying and final tournaments.

Day-by-day summaries

Day 1 (June 25)

First day was devoted to first round matches.

  • Efren Reyes needed all 17 racks to defeat Mark Gray. Gray led 6–2 at the start of the match, but Reyes tied the score at 7–all. Reyes later went on the hill, but fumbled on the next rack to allow Gray to tie the match at hill-hill. Reyes sank a ball on the break and cleared the table to win the match.[2]
  • Defending champion Francisco Bustamante stayed on the winner's bracket when he won 9–7 after leading 5–2 against Filipino Caneda Villamor. Villamor, who works in Saudi Arabia as a pool instructor, cut Bustamante's lead to 6–5 when the match turned into a battle of safety shots; Bustamante won after he converted a combination shot between the 6-ball and the 9-ball.[2]
  • Like his opponent at last year's final, 2010 runner-up Kuo Po-cheng also needed 16 racks to beat Ahmad Taufi Murni of Brunei to stay at the winner's bracket.[2]

Day 2 (June 26)

Second day ended the first round matches.

  • World #2 Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines had an easy time against Eritrean Hamzah al-Saeed, scoring a 9–5 win; his compatriot and World #3 Antonio Lining also won comfortably with a 9–4 decision against Taiwanese Liu Cheng-Cheih. Lining will face Japanese Tohru Kuribayashi after winning against Oliver Ortmann of Germany 9–6.[3]
  • Britain's Daryl Peach will face Saudi Arabian Mohammad al-Hazmi, who upset world #24 Nguyen Phuc Long 9–6, after beating Singaporean Keng Kwang Chan 9–5. Mohanna Obaidly, the highest ranked player from the host country, prevented elimination by beating Andrew Kong of Hong Kong, while Mark Gray also staved off elimination when he beat Vilmos Foldes of Hungary 9–7 after trailing 2–7.[3]
  • On the day's matches that needed the 17th rack to finish, Radoslav Babica of Poland and Yukio Akakariyama of Japan beat Filipino Raymund Faron and Qatar's Mohammed Al Bin Ali, respectively to stay in the winners' bracket.[3]

Day 3 (June 27)

Third day was devoted to second round matches. Winners in the winners' bracket advance to the Round of 64, while those in the losers' bracket winners will play the winners' bracket losers on the next day.

  • All Filipinos in the winners' bracket won their matches to advance to the Round of 64; World #1 Dennis Orcollo, Reyes, Bustamante, Oliver Medenilla, Jeffery de Luna, Alan Cuartero, Ronnie Alcano and Antonio Lining were among the Round of 64 qualifiers. 2006 champion Alcano had to win at the 17th rack to defeat Radoslaw Babica of Poland, while Cuartero, an overseas Filipino worker in Kuwait, defeated Marcus Chamat of Sweden.[4]
  • Shane Van Boening, one of only two Americans on the tournament, won at the 17th rack against 2005 champion Wu Jia-qing. Wu lead 2–0, then went on the hill at 8–6. Van Boening evened the match and held on to win on the final rack.[4]

Day 4 (June 28)

Fourth day was devoted to second round matches in the losers' bracket. The losers are eliminated.

  • All Qataris were eliminated from contention: Mohanna Obaidly was beaten by Russian Konstantin Stepanov 9–3, Japanese Tohru Kuribayashi only lost one rack en route in beating Taher Hussain, Waleed Majid was the closest among the Qataris in the knockout stage but was beaten by Hunter Lombardo of the U.S. at the 17th rack, while Fawal Abdulatif lost to Naoyuki Oi of Japan 9–6.[5]
  • The British contingent fared well as seven of them advanced to the knockout round.[5]
  • The match between Antonio Gabica of the Philippines and Fu Jian-bo needed 17th racks to finish. The Qatar-based Gabica had a 6–1 lead but the Chinese won the next four racks. Gabica was the first on the hill but Fu won the next three racks. Gabica won the deciding rack to advance to the knockout stage.[5]
  • Taiwanese Ko Ping-chun and Kwang Yong of South Korea exchanged leads in their match, until Yong pulled ahead 7–4. Ko tied the match at 7–all but the Korean won the next two racks to qualify to the next round.[4]
  • Former double world champion Wu Jia-qing was beaten by Mariusz Skoneczny[5] after Wu missed on the 8-ball on a hill-hill match; the Pole sank the last two balls to eliminate Wu.

Day 5 (June 29)

The Round of 64 was held on the fifth day.

  • In matchup involving Filipinos, Villamor defeated Reyes 11–5 to advance to the Round of 32. Reyes suffered poor form in breaking that caused his defeat.[6]
  • Bustamante and Indonesian Riyan Setiawan will face each other after defeating their opponents; Bustamante won against Germany’s Sascha-Andrej Tege 11–4, while the Indonesian eliminated Carlo Cabello of Spain 11–8.[6]
  • Gabica led Finnish Mika Immonen 4–1, then went on the hill at 10–6 when he scratched. The Finn won the next four racks to go hill-hill; the final rack emerged as a safety battle until Gabica pocketed the 1-ball. The Filipino ran out and won the match.[6]
  • Mark Gray of the UK had a come-from-behind win against last year's runner-up Kuo Po-cheng. Kuo led 10–6 but Gray won the next racks, including a run out at the final rack, to win the match. Gray will meet fellow Briton Chris Melling who beat Korean Hwang Yong.[6]

Day 6 (June 30)

By the end of the sixth day, only four players remained to play on the final day.

Round of 32

  • Bustamante was leading 9–4 when he got distracted by a press photographer. This is when his Indonesian opponent Riyan Setiawan caught up with him with a score of 10–7. Riyan tied the score at 10–all and Bustamante broke for the match. The two engaged in a safety battle in the final rack when Riyan scratched and Bustamante ran out to advance to the next round later in the day.[7]
  • In an all-Filipino match, Carlo Biado led Lee Van Corteza 8–5 when Corteza retook the lead at 9–6 when he missed a shot at the 9-ball that could've put him on the hill. Biado ran out the rest of the racks to score a berth to the next round.[7]

Round of 16

  • Shane Van Boening, the only American left in the field, led against British Darren Appleton 6–3. Appleton tied at 6–6, then took the lead 7–6. The two exchanged leads when Appleton reached the hill first when the American missed. Van Boening tied when he made a jump shot and two other difficult shots. On the final rack, Van Boening made a safety in which Appleton studied for ten minutes. Appleton missed, but there was no clear shot as Van Boening studied the ball for several minutes before making the shot and ran out for the win.[8]
  • 2007 champion Daryl Peach will face 2011 8-ball champion Dennis Orcullo after the Briton defeated Ko Pin-yi. Orcullo had earlier beaten the defending champion Bustamante, who went hill-hill on his Round of 32 match.[8]
  • Mark Gray defeated fellow Briton Chris Melling to join Peach as the Britons in the quarterfinals.[8]
  • Yukio Akakariyama eliminated Biado to join Toru Kuribayashi who also defeated another Filipino, Antonio Lining. The two Japanese players join the Filipinos, Britons and an American in the quarterfinals.[8]

Quarterfinals

  • Orcullo led 5-0 against Peach as the Briton would not get any closer as he was blown out 11–2.[9]
  • Gray had a 4–0 lead over Van Boening when the American won the next five racks to take a 5–4 lead. Gray then won the next four racks and led 10–6 later the match. Van Boening, who had to win all of the remaining racks, scored on a combination after Gray fouled. Van Boening broke and ran out on the next rack, then Gray fouled on the break on the next rack. Van Boening was on his way on running out when missed on a shot that involved the bridge. The two took their time on studying the nine-ball when Van Boening made an errant safety in which Gray capitalized to win the match.[9]
  • Toru Kuribayashi trailed Ronnie Alcano 7–3 when Kuribayashi tied the score at 8–all. Alcano retook the lead but Kuribayashi won the next two racks. Alcano ran out on the next rack to tie the score for the final time. Kuribayashi broke for the game but the two got locked in a safety battle. Alcano managed to hit on the 3-ball, that almost did not fall on the pocket; ALcano then ran out to face Orcullo in the semifinals ensuring that a Filipino will play in the final.[9]
  • Vinacio Tanio consistently trailed Akakariyama until he tied the game at 8–all, then led 9–8. He missed an easy shot on the 6-ball that led to Akakariyama running out the rack to tie the match anew. Tanio missed on a bank shot but the ball sank on an unintended pocket to reach the hill first; Akakariyama broke and ran out to tie the match for the last time. Tanio was on his way on a break and run out when he had faced a difficult shot on the 8-ball. He sank the 8-ball but then faced on another difficult shot on the 9-ball. Tanio missed and Akakariyama faced on a table's length shot on the 9-ball. Akakariyama took over ten minutes to study the shot before shooting it on a rail to the pocket to clinch a semifinals berth.[9]
