The 2009 ICC Awards were held on 1 October 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa for before the semi-finals of 2009 ICC Champions Trophy. Nominations were announced in Mumbai in early September while shortlist was announced on 15 September. These awards were given on the performance of the players between 13 August 2008 and 24 August 2009 and were presented in association with Federation of International Cricketers' Associations. It took into account performances by players and officials during this period of time for the game.

International Cricket Council had been hosting ICC Awards since 2004, which were now into their sixth year. The previous ones were held in London, Sydney, Mumbai and Dubai, with Johannesburg having hosted twice now. The ICC awards the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy to the Cricketer of the Year, that of which is considered to be the most prestigious award in world cricket.

The Selection Panel

The ICC Awards selection panel were given a difficult task; providing a long-list of nominations to the 25 members of the voting academy to cast their votes in the individual player award categories and, using their experience and knowledge select the ICC World Test and ODI teams. The winners of the 2009 ICC Awards were announced on 1 October 2009 in a grand ceremony in Johannesburg by the International Cricket Council. The following are the winners of the different awards:[2]

MS Dhoni was selected as both the captain and wicketkeeper of both ICC Teams of the Year
