The 1922–23 League of Ireland was the second season of senior football in Republic of Ireland. It began on September 16, 1922, and ended in March, 1923. St James's Gate was the defending champion. Shamrock Rovers was the winner for this season.
Overview
Frankfort and YMCA were not re-elected, both teams completed the previous season 1921-22, with YMCA finishing in 8th and last position and Frankfort finishing in 6th position. The League was extended to 12 teams from 8 with the election of the following new teams, Athlone Town, Midland Athletic, Pioneers, Rathmines Athletic, Shelbourne United and Shamrock Rovers. Athlone Town became the first team from outside of County Dublin to compete in the league. Rathmines Athletic left near the end of the season in March 1923 with their remaining match awarded as a win for Dublin United. Olympia v Athlone Town was not played, the points were shared.
