1116 SEN (ACMA callsign: 3AK), the acronym standing for Sports Entertainment Network, is a commercial AM radio station based in Melbourne, Australia, operating on 1116 kHz. It is currently owned and operated by Pacific Star Network Limited.

History

The station opened as 3AK on 29 November 1931. A number of unusual events and precedents throughout the station's history make its story of unusual interest. Of particular interest is that the station was originally only permitted to broadcast when rival stations were not on the air, that is, mainly in the early hours of the morning. From 1954 the station was permitted to broadcast during daylight hours, but not in the evenings, on account of interference between 3AK and 2BS Bathurst with which it shared its wavelength. In 1961, the station was purchased by Australian Consolidated Press and thus affiliated with GTV-9}, with most high-profile GTV personalities also broadcasting on 3AK.[1]

In the early 21st century, some unusual programming decisions and lack of promotion led to 3AK failing to lift from the bottom of the ratings ladder. In late 2003, its managing company Data and Commerce Limited announced that it had leased the running of radio 3AK to a new organisation Sports Entertainment Network who were to convert 3AK to a 24-hour sport radio station, to be known as SEN. This deal was engineered by former 5AA General Manager, Danny Staffieri.[2] However, the official ACA/Australian Communications Authority callsign remains 3AK.[3]

The station began broadcasting as SEN in late January 2004.

In early 2005 SEN 1323 was launched in Adelaide simulcasting from SEN 1116 bar the Saturday morning show (Mark Aiston, Matthew Primus & Mark Bickley) & SANFL broadcasts. This ceased after SEN 1323 went into administration and was rebranded as Cruise 1323.

In July 2015, the newsroom shared between SEN and sister station 3MP 1377 was closed, replaced with a service from Macquarie National News.[4][5]

In November 2015, it was announced that Francis Leach would depart ABC Grandstand Digital following the axing of the Grandstand Breakfast programme, and will again join SEN, hosting Breakfast with Frank and Ox alongside David “The Ox” Schwarz to replace The Morning Glory.[6] Current co-host Andy Maher will move to afternoons, launching SEN Afternoons., moving Daniel Harford into drive with Mark Allen.[6] Andrew Gaze will remain in a fill-in role, with Tim Watson to remain a contributor on breakfast during the 2016 AFL season.[6]

Shows

  • Breakfast with Garry & Tim is hosted by Garry Lyon and Tim Watson. The show was originally called Morning Glory and later SEN Breakfast and was hosted by Garry Lyon, Billy Brownless and Tim Watson, but Lyon left the show after 2004 and Andy Maher was brought in. Watson left the show at the end of 2013 but returned for 2015, and Andrew Gaze hosted alongside Maher. Lyon returned in 2017 to host with Watson and with Hamish McLachlan, but the latter left at the end of the year.
  • Whateley is hosted by Gerard Whateley (Monday-Thursday) and Kane Cornes on Fridays and features regular contributions from Stephen Quartermain, Robert Murphy, Nathan Buckley and Sharni Layton among others.
  • Afternoons is hosted by Andrew Maher. The show had formerly been hosted by Mark Doran, Daniel Harford (under the program name Harf Time), Francis Leach and an earlier stint from Maher.
  • KB & The Doc is hosted by Kevin Bartlett and Dr Turf (John Rothfield). The pair took over the drive slot in 2018 from The Run Home, hosted by Mark Allen and David Schwarz. Bartlett had previously been a solo morning host at SEN with Hungry For Sport since 2004. The show's inception in 2004 included an original lineup of Anthony Hudson, Dermott Brereton and Matthew Hardy. Schwarz soon replaced Brereton, Hudson left for Francis Leach and Hardy departed. Allen then became the show's long-term co-host alongside Schwarz.
  • The Sporting Capital, hosted by Jack Heverin, airs every evening and features a mixture of sports discussion and live sport.
  • The Overnight Crowd runs overnight.

  • Tiger Tragics, a Richmond-centric podcast hosted by SEN fill-in and weekend host and MCG public address announcer Tony Schibeci and SEN producers Mitchell Scott and Karl Bianco.
  • The Carlton Show, a Carlton-centric podcast co-hosted by Maher.
  • The Geelong Show, a Geelong-centric podcast co-hosted by Ben Casanelia of Inside Football, SEN's AFL magazine.
  • SEN America, covering American sports leagues such as the NBA.
