Wars and conflicts lead to a decrease in food production (CE2006-4aiii):

  • People are forced to leave their farmland to become refugees. The labour supply for farming drops.
  • Capital is lost.
  • Agricultural production facilities, irrigation systems, farmlands, infrastructure and transport are destroyed.
  • Resources are drained for military purposes, so less capital is used to develop farming.

All these reduce food production. In addition:

  • It is hard for international aid to reach war zones, so emergency food supply is disrupted.
