Subfamily Cyperoideae (cont'd)

Tribe Cariceae

Carex
The genus Carex is represented by more than 200 species in New York. Of these, all but about a dozen species are native to New York State.[1] Of the non-native taxa, the two species of Asiatic sand sedge, included here in Carex sect. Macrocephalae, are considered to be potentially invasive.[2] Only one of these, Carex kobomugi, has been reported in New York (a single population in 2013), but both have been reported in nearby states.

Here, the genus is organized by sections, using the modified version of Kenneth Kent Mackenzie’s system used in the Flora of North America.[3]
