The United States and the Soviet Union were in a nuclear standoff for 13 days.This event began with the Soviet Union having nuclear missiles in a facility on Cuba, 90 miles from Florida. President John F. Kennedy demanded that the Soviet Union remove those missiles. The United States blockaded Cuba to stop the Soviets from bringing military supplies to the island. After discussion the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to dismantle the warheads in exchange for the U.S. not invading Cuba. The United States also removed nuclear warheads it had in Turkey.
