Modern geographic distribution of Breton

Breton is a Celtic language spoken in Brittany, in western France, where it was historically the primary language of Lower Brittany and a minority language in Upper Brittany. Its use declined in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to the point where it has only 206,000 speakers in Brittany in 2007.[1]

Breton is a Brythonic language most closely related to Cornish, and more distantly to Welsh. It also related to the other modern Celtic languages of Irish, Manx and Scottish Gaelic, although much more distantly as they are part of the other branch of Insular Celtic, the Goidelic branch.
