From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ow-, *h₂ew- (to see, perceive), with the regular loss of a laryngeal before *h₂. Cognates include Ancient Greek αἰσθάνομαι (aisthánomai, to perceive), Latin audiō (I hear, listen) and Sanskrit आविस् (āvís, openly, manifestly, evidently).
