From Sanskrit मनुष्य (manuṣyá) (compare मानुष (mā́nuṣa)), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *manuṣyás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *manušyás, from Proto-Indo-European *mon- (“man”). Cognate with Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀡𑀼𑀰𑁆𑀰 (maṇuśśa), Pali manussa.
