According to Bailey from the Proto-Iranian preverb *ā- + *ĵƔnati (ā€œbe bornā€), which is from Proto-Indo-European *Ēµenhā‚-. Cognate with Avestan š¬š¬Æš¬„š¬€ā€Ž (āsna, ā€œnobleā€), Khotanese [script needed] (āysƱa-, ā€œwell-born, nobleā€), first component of Middle Persian [script needed] (Ź¾znŹ¾wl /āznāwar/), as well as Old Armenian Õ”Õ¦Õ¶ (azn), Georgian įƒįƒ–įƒœįƒ˜ (azni), įƒįƒ–įƒœįƒįƒ£įƒ įƒ˜ (aznauri), Iranian loanwords.
