From Proto-Iranian *kapawtakáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kapawtakás, from *kapáwtas (grey-blue). Cognate with Sanskrit कपोतक (kapotaka, pigeon-coloured), Old Armenian կապուտակ (kaputak) (an Iranian borrowing).
