First attested in the Beonyeok nogeoldae (飜譯老乞大 / 번역노걸대), 1517, as Middle Korean 오ᄂᆡ (wonoy). Likely a borrowing from Middle Mongolian ᠣᠨᠢ (oni, arrow notch), whence Mongolian онь (onʹ).
