새옹지마

  Fortune and misfortune alternate and complement, being hard to foresee the irony. Near the frontier there lived a father good at divination. A horse of his accidentally went into the barbarian land; all consoled. The father said, "Why could this not suddenly go fortunate?" After several months, the horse came back together with a fine horse from the barbarian land; all congratulated. The father said, "Why could this not suddenly go unfortunate?" The house had many fine horses; so his son liked riding them, but at last fell off his horse and had his leg broken; all consoled. The father said, "Why could this not suddenly go fortunate?" One year later, the barbarians invaded the frontier, and all able-bodied men took up arms and went to war. Of those men from the frontier, nine out of ten were killed. It is owing to the broken leg that the father had the son survived. Accordingly, fortune begets misfortune, and vice versa. This goes on forever, its depth being unfathomable.
