First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 비취다 (pichwita). Derived from (bit, “light”). Causatives: 비추이— (bichu-i-), 비취— (bichwi-). Cognate with 비치— (bichi-).
