Etymology

First attested in the Hunmin jeongeum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆸ (Yale: puzep). Also attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 브ᅀᅥᆨ (Yale: puzek). Also attested in the Beonyeok sohak (飜譯小學 / 번역소학), 1517, as Middle Korean  (Yale: pus). From (beul, “fire”) (modern (bul)) + the now-obsolete (seop, “side”).

Probably related to Jeju 부섭 (buseop, furnace) and Gyeongsang 부섴 (buseok, “furnace, kitchen”).
