First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 머리 (meori). Believed to arise from the root 맏 (mat), which is fossilized in constructions such as 맏아들 (madadeul) ("eldest son"). Perhaps related to a unit of counting animals, 마리 (mari) See also 뇌 (noe)
