First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Middle Korean ᄂᆞᄅᆞᄇᆡ (nolopoy). Equivalent to 나루 (naru, “ferry”) + (-s-, genitive infix) + (bae, “boat”).
