Etymology

Borrowed from Japanese  (こく) (みん) (がっ) (こう) (kokumingakkō), which substituted 소학교 (小學校, sohakgyo) between 1941-1947. Replaced by 초등학교 (chodeunghakgyo) in 1996 in order to liquidate remnants of colonial and militaristic influence by Japanese empire.
