First attested in the Gugeopganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 가ᇰ아지 (kang.aci). From 가히 (kahi, “dog”) (> (gae)) + ᅌᅡ지 (-ngaci, diminutive suffix) (> 아지 (aji)).
