Originally it was made from various plants similar to Chinese honey locust (Gleditsia sinensis) (皂莢/皂荚 (zàojiá)), including Sapindus saponaria (肥珠子) and Gymnocladus chinensis (肥皂莢/肥皂荚), which have large fruits.
