Calque of Dutch waterstof (literally waterstuff), equivalent to (sui, water) + (so, element). Compare German Wasserstoff, Luxembourgish Waasserstoff. Created by Udagawa Yōan in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 in 1834 (“水素”).
