Etymology

Wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese 大連 (だいれん) (dairen), ultimately from the name of the original Russian settlement, Russian Да́льний (Dálʹnij, literally distant). Folk etymology suggests a derivation from 褡褳褡裢 (dālian, “type of rectangle-shaped pocket with a pouch in the middle and two bags at the ends”).
