Etymology
Compound of Middle Chinese-derived elements 元 (gen, “original”) + 治 (ji, “rule, command”). The era name was composed based on divination using the I Ching.[1]
Usage notes
Preceded by 文久 (Bunkyū) and followed by 慶応 (Keiō). The reigning emperor was Emperor Kōmei (孝明天皇).
