Etymology

Unknown. Either borrowed from English masochism with minor modification based on the transcription of the German sounds /z/ (spelled s) and [x] (spelled ch), or a calque of English masochism, equivalent to マゾッホ (Mazohho, from German Masoch) + イズム (-izumu, -ism). Compare German Masochismus [mazoˈxɪsmʊs].
