Analyzed as wasei eigo (和製英語), from English high + socks,[1], as a borrowing from the English phrase high socks,[2] or as an abbreviation of English knee-high socks.

Usage notes
There is some overlap in meaning between the terms ハイソックス (hai sokkusu) and ニーソックス (nī sokkusu). Generally speaking, the difference is that ハイソックス are often not as long as ニーソックス.
