どっこいしょ (rōmaji dokkoisho)

  1. uttered when making a great physical exertion, or when moving while fatigued
    • 1998, Kazuko Shikita, Oigokoro no honne [Truth of an aged heart], Hajime ni [Introduction]:
      たとえば、どうしていつもアどっこいしょ ()うのか。年寄 (としよ)りだから...。そりゃあそうですが、 (わたし)六十代 (ろくじゅうだい) (なか)ばになってから、 (あさ)、スイと ()きられなくなりました。
      Tatoeba, dōshite itsumo a dokkoisho to iu no ka. Toshiyori da kara. Soryā sō desu ga, watashi mo rokujūdai nakaba ni natte kara, asa, sui to okirarenaku narimashita.
      For example, why do I always say ah, dokkoisho? From age... That’s true, but even from my mid-sixties I couldn’t wake up easily in the morning.
