Etymology

From Demotic pr ꜥꜣ (king), from Egyptian pr ꜥꜣ (palace, pharaoh).


The initial p has been reanalysed as a masculine singular definite article and omitted. Cognate to Coptic ⲫⲁⲣⲁⲱ (pharaō), Hebrew פַּרְעֹה and Ancient Greek φαραώ (pharaṓ).
