From Proto-Slavic *stanъ, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (to stand, stay), whence also стати (stati, to stand), ставити (staviti, to set, place), стояти (stojati, to stand), стадо (stado, herd) and столъ (stolŭ, seat, throne). Cognate with Persian ستان (stân, -stan) and Sanskrit स्थान (sthā́na, abode, dwelling).
