Could be from a Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“flow, stream”), and thus cognate to Sanskrit सर्म (sárma, “going, running, flowing”), from root सरति (sarati, “to flow, run, speed”). Could also be from ὄρνυμι (órnumi, “I urge on, incite”).
