ἰσθμός

See also: Ἰσθμός

Ancient Greek

Etymology

A derivation from εἶμι (eîmi, to go) with a suffix "-θμο-" has been assumed, comparing also Old Norse eið (isthmus). However, the "-σ-" is unexplained, so the word could well be of Pre-Greek origin.
