ἰσθμός
See also: Ἰσθμός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
A derivation from εἶμι (eîmi, “to go”) with a suffix "-θμο-" has been assumed, comparing also Old Norse eið (“isthmus”). However, the "-σ-" is unexplained, so the word could well be of Pre-Greek origin.
