From Proto-Indo-European *h₂érh₃trom, from *h₂erh₃- + *-trom; equivalent to ἀρόω (aróō, to plough) + -τρον (-tron, instrument noun suffix). Cognates include Latin arātrum, Old Armenian արաւր (arawr).
