Alternative forms

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂m̥bʰi (round about, around), same source as Old High German umbi (around), Old Irish imb, Old English (near, by), Latin ambi-, Sanskrit अभितस् (abhítas, on both sides).

ᾰ̓μφῐ́ς (amphís)

  1. on both sides
  2. around
  3. apart, asunder
  4. separately
  5. between

ᾰ̓μφῐ́ς (amphís) (governs the genitive)

Usage notes

While ἀμφίς is technically simply an alternative spelling of ἀμφί, in practice the former generally functions as an adverb, and the latter as a preposition. Both are largely replaced by περί in later Greek.
