From Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (to grind). Cognate with Old Armenian աղամ (ałam, grind, pound), Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 (aṣ̌a, ground), Middle Persian THNNtn' (ārtan, to grind), Persian آرد (ārd, flour).
