From Proto-Mon-Khmer *bn₂uum ~ *bn₂əm (“hill”). Cognate with Semelai [bnʉm] and Koho bönöm (“mountain”). Munda cognates include Santali ᱵᱩᱱᱩᱢ (bunum, “termite hill, white ant hill”).
