From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer danle, danley (“large body of water”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d(n)liʔ (“large river, sea”); cognate with Chong /tʰəleː/, Phong-Kniang /sleː/ and possibly Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] kamalē (“sea”).
