From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer danle, danley (large body of water), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d(n)liʔ (large river, sea); cognate with Chong /tʰəleː/, Phong-Kniang /sleː/ and possibly Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] kamalē (sea).
