From Old Georgian ძელი (ʒeli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ʒ₁el-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჯა (ǯa, tree) and Laz ჯა (ǯa, tree). Compare also Old Armenian ձեղուն (jełun).
