ჩიტი

Georgian

ჩიტი

Alternative forms

  • ჩიტ (čiṭ) (Ingilo dialect)

Etymology

Attested since Middle Georgian.

According to Čubinov, an Armenian borrowing: compare Old Armenian ծիտ (cit), Middle Armenian չիտ (čʿit), ջիտ (ǰit, sparrow). This is rejected by Ačaṙean, because in Armenian the word is used post-classically and infrequently and now is present in Eastern dialects only; he considers the Armenian words to be borrowed from Kartvelian, the Middle Armenian forms specifically from Georgian.
