Etymology

From Proto-Kartvelian *q̇wiʒ₁-l-, from *q̇wiʒ₁ (to raise, wake, be awake). Ultimately a cognate to Svan ყუიჟე (q̇uiže), which may also be related to Georgian ყვითელი (q̇viteli, yellow) (compare Old Georgian ყჳთელი (q̇witeli)).
