Etymology

From the name of Saint Nino, called Նունէ (Nunē) in Old Armenian sources, probably of Classical Syriac origin. Others relate it to the name of the Assyrian goddess of fertility — Nina (also called Ishtar), whence also Old Armenian Նանէ (Nanē, Nane).
