Etymology

Cognates include Mingrelian მა- -ა (ma- -a).

Originally, this circumfix along with სა- -ე (sa- -e) signified grammatical category. The former denoted animate, while the latter - inanimate (which included animals) objects. Compare modern Georgian terms მე-ღორ-ე (me-ɣor-e, swine-herd) and სა-ღორ-ე (sa-ɣor-e, pigsty).
