From Proto-Georgian-Zan root *s₁loḳ- (to hiccup). Cognates include Mingrelian შიკინი (šiḳini). Due to its onomatopoeic origin, the phonetic resemblance can be found in other languages as well. (compare German Schluckauf, English hiccup as well as Proto-Indo-European *(s)leuk-).
