Etymology

Origin is uncertain. According to some sources, related to ზანავი (zanavi) (a common Georgian toponym), arguing the fact that the root *ზან- (*zan-) is present in multiple Georgian hydronyms.

On the other hand, compare Hinukh гӏалазан, олозен (lake), Bezhta алазан (lake) and Tsez гӏалза́н, гӏалазан (lake).
