Etymology

Connected with Mingrelian ობედი (obedi), Svan ჰაბედ (habed), ჰობედ (hobed), აბედ (abed) on the one hand and with Old Armenian աբեթ (abetʿ), Middle Armenian աբեդ (abed) on the other. The direction of borrowing is uncertain.

Marr considers the Armenian to be borrowed from Georgian, deriving the Kartvelian forms from a root meaning “to burn”[1]; compare Svan ლი-ბიდ (li-bid), მჷ-ბიდ (mə-bid, “combustible”), ლი-ბდინ-ე (li-bdin-e, “to set on fire”). Starostin and Klimov reconstruct Proto-Kartvelian *abed- (“tinder”) and *bdw- (“to burn”) respectively.[2][3] J̌ahukyan accepts the Georgian borrowing of Armenian.[4]

Ačaṙyan is skeptical and allows for the possibility that the borrowing was actually in the opposite direction, from Armenian into Kartvelian, but he does not give an etymology for the Armenian word.[5]
